The cold in the hills of Garda does not sting, it is as sweet as a freshly baked “fogassa.”
The warmth that rises from the lake spreads warmly over the vines, and walking is a pleasure to be savored calmly, like the anticipation of the holidays that light up the village of Garda.
Christmas here is celebrated “among the Olives,” with a seasonal market where you can find the authentic flavors of the Garda area and hinterland, and many handcrafted products for the perfect gift to put under the tree.
The Garda winter sunshine softens the winter and is an invitation to be active in this season as well: a bike ride, a round at the golf club, or hiking on the gentle west-facing hills.
But if it’s the snow that attracts you, within an hour you’ll be on the lifts of Monte Baldo, going up on the Malcesine Cable Car, or going up the Adige Valley to ski in the wonderful lake-view area, suitable for all levels.
And when the sun starts to go down, excitement and adrenaline fade into the relaxation of a spa, amid caresses of water and fragrances, smelling saunas and warming visitors with warm herbal teas found in the various Garda facilities.
Christmas is approaching, and sweet fogassa and San Vigilini are getting decked out to end up under the fir trees of relatives and friends all over the Peninsula. And needless to say, Verona is not far away, and even in Garda at the center of the holiday table shines the “pan de l’oro,” strictly artisanal, a local pride known throughout the world.
In home kitchens or restaurant kitchens, it is the ideal time for more challenging and caloric menus, consisting of “earthy” dishes such as gnocchi, risottos or roasts, enhanced by characterful reds such as Valpolicella and Amarone, or softened by the delicacy of a glass of Custoza. And for the holidays, you can’t miss the Garda DOC bubbles.
